Veteran investigative journalist, columnist, author, satirist and stand-up comedian, Marianne Thamm, currently Associate Editor of the Daily Maverick, returns to The Baxter stage after 12 years, to present Round of Applause - South Africa Still Standing with Marianne Thamm from 16 to 19 August and 25 August at 8pm and a Saturday matinee at 3pm on 26 August 2023.
Join the outspoken and respected commentator for an evening of conversation and comedy, celebrating the strengths of South Africa’s democracy as she looks at South Africa’s recent past and how and why we are still standing. Get ready for 2024 when things can only get better.
“We all know what is wrong or what went wrong in South Africa. But we also know what went right?”, says Thamm. “Celebrate some groundbreaking moments about how our young democracy withstood a sustained and criminal onslaught on the state and how the country fought back. A lot is left standing believe it or not. 2024 is a big year for South Africa.”
She continues, “A general election is on the horizon. With the new Electoral Act and a wider range of candidates to choose from the political landscape is about to become more exciting. This is a pivotal moment in South Africa’s history. Are you ready for the ride.”
Thamm has worked in the media space for over three decades and her work has appeared in a variety of local and international newspapers and magazines. She has published several books which include the best-selling I Have Life: Alison's Journey, When All Else Falls Away - The Nigel Fairhead Story, How to be a South African, Shooting the Moon, To Catch a Cop: The Paul O'Sullivan Story, Mental Floss and Fairlady Collection: Forty Years of Fine Writing. In 2016, she released the memoir, Hitler, Verwoerd, Mandela and me.
A former Fleur du Cap judge, she was part of The Baxter’s Women’s Month programme in 2011 with a return season of the highly acclaimed, hilarious production, Cracks in the City II, performed by an all-female foursome of comedians.
